Kaamilah Von Schoultz: Opportunities to explore

If you mix the opportunities for learning with the dynamic tasks, add a great working culture and collaboration, then you have covered most – but not all – of the reasons why Kaamilah enjoys working at Tieto Tech Consulting.

Kaamilah started at Tieto in Norway back in 2021, fresh out of school in her native country of South Africa. After two years she wanted to explore the start-up scene, but two years later she returned.

The opportunities to explore are much bigger here at Tieto Tech Consulting, whereas in a start-up you only have time to work on what’s critical then and there. Here at Tieto us employees are given time and resources to upskill – even within areas well outside of our current expertise.

Kaamilah mentions both certifications and courses as sources for her upskilling.

Tieto has strategic partnerships that offer certifications, and when it comes to external courses and conferences, you need to make a clear case for their relevance and learning value. When well justified, the company is supportive of such development opportunities.

Data engineer

Kaamilah currently works as a data engineer for the client NG Nordic, who operates within the waste management industry.

I’m a data engineer and started working on a data platform using Power BI and extensive analysis. I’m currently working on consolidating two existing platforms into a new one, after a merger with a Finnish company.

This merger means international collaboration, something Kaamilah finds adds an interesting element to her work.

Not only do I get to work with clients in Finland, but also some of my colleagues at Tieto in Finland. Being an expat myself, I quite like an international vibe at work. It adds some interesting perspectives.

Increased sustainability

The data platform at NG Nordic covers the standard ERP data one would expect in a big company but also data used to decrease the environmental footprint of the company.

We’re gathering and structuring data about emissions, anything from CO2 emissions in production to emissions from their transportation fleet. We help find the best routes for gas consumption optimization, as an example.

The data platform also gathers data on toxicology and water pollutants, making sure that all operations are compliant with environmental regulations. Kaamilah sees this as a great learning experience.

Getting domain knowledge is great; learning how emissions are both created and reduced is something I knew very little of beforehand. So not only do I increase my expertise as a data engineer, but I also learn interesting facts about waste management and sustainability.

An inclusive culture

Moving to a foreign country can sometimes be stressful, with feelings of alienation. The work culture at Tieto Tech Consulting has made the stay up north anything but stressful.

An element of the work culture I really enjoy is the work-life balance. It’s like night and day compared to South Africa, where you work like a dog out of fear that someone else will take your job if you don’t. Now don’t kid yourself – we work hard at Tieto too - but I also have ample time to become an even better climber.

Kaamilah also describes the culture as very egalitarian.

You do know who your boss is, but there is no real hierarchy when it comes to voicing your opinion. I feel very welcome and people are very friendly.

When it comes to her team, she first and foremost describes them as young.

We’re a very young team in fact, which is nice in the sense that we have many things in common. We all want to do similar things at after work, for example. We quite like different activities, like work-out sessions, dodgeball, going for a run or who can take the most pull-ups. Stupid things, but quite fun. The social committee works hard to keep the social events calendar full. It gets people to come to the office – which I’m a fan of.
