Iselin Johnsen Norum: Where technical expertise and domain experience merge

Iselin is a great example of how Tieto Caretech merges technical expertise with domain experience to create innovative solutions for the healthcare industry.

Iselin joined Tieto Caretech in 2025 as a Senior Product Manager. Over the past decade, she has worked in health tech companies, contributing to the development of digital solutions used across the Norwegian healthcare sector – from GP offices and emergency care to health clinics, physical therapy clinics and hospitals.

The best technical solutions are developed with the user in mind. Technology should adapt to clinical practice, not the other way around. My experience from working with the healthcare sector has given me a good foundation while also reminding me how important it is to keep learning from the people who use these systems every day.

Although she has first-hand experience, Iselin and her team seek additional understanding of the user needs through extensive research.

Good research helps us understand user needs in depth. Through interviews and workshops, we listen carefully to how users experience their everyday work and bring these perspectives into our team discussions. At the same time, we try to balance current needs with future possibilities, users naturally describe what they know, while innovation allows us to explore new ways of supporting their work.

Developing and implementing solutions also involves the users.

We first design a prototype where we consider technical possibilities, design and UX, and then we test it with users. What follows is an iterative process of adjusting and testing.

AI will be key

When it comes to innovative solutions, Iselin believes AI will play a key role in the further development of solutions in the healthcare industry.

I don’t think AI will replace healthcare professionals but rather strengthen the collaboration between clinical expertise and technology.

She sees AI as a key enabler for translating clinical knowledge into practical, supportive tools, reducing cognitive load for clinicians and allowing them to focus more on patient care.

By supporting clinicians with decision support, better overview of patient data and early warning signals, and at the same time empowering patients to manage parts of their own health, AI can contribute to more sustainable healthcare services.

Iselin is convinced that AI will be vital in handling a growing elderly population.

A job with great meaning

Although she got her first job in the healthcare industry by coincidence, staying is a very deliberate choice for Iselin.

Knowing that the solutions we develop can make everyday healthcare work a little better, for both patients and clinicians, is what motivates me.

Iselin’s motivation is fueled by her personal experience with the healthcare sector.

Like everyone else, I too have had to deal with the healthcare industry, both through childbirth and visits to doctors with my kids. It’s therefore easy to relate to the solutions we help develop and implement, making my job even more relevant.

When it comes to naming examples of exciting technology development, Iselin is quick to mention the opportunities that lie in AI.

It’s interesting that we can already call voice-to-text based systems yesterday’s news. It shows the rapid development in this industry. Diagnostic support is also an area where AI can help doctors to find more accurate answers more quickly.

She also mentions the potential in coordinating various sources of patient information to give healthcare personnel an updated epicrisis.

Today there are too many systems with unstructured data that don’t communicate well with each other. The potential for improvement is vast.

Development

It’s not only the technology and healthcare industry that are evolving rapidly – so is Iselin’s professional development. Leadership is not new to her, but something she has grown into through experience over time.

I’ve held leadership roles in previous positions, but without formal leadership training. For a long time, I had been thinking about strengthening that experience with a solid academic foundation.

Early on at Tieto Caretech, Iselin shared her ambition to take on more responsibility and further develop her leadership skills.

When I mentioned my wish to combine my role with formal leadership studies, the response was immediate and very encouraging.

She is currently completing a Bachelor of Management at BI, with Leadership in Action as her final course.

I had only been with the company for a short time, yet Tieto was willing to invest in my long-term development. That level of trust has been incredibly motivating and says a lot about the culture and belief in people’s potential.
