Haakon Hetland: Possibilities are plentiful

Haakon started his career at Tieto back in 2012, working with support and troubleshooting related to hosting and networks.

Over the thirteen years since then, he has worked with a number of different tasks.

- After a few years, I had the opportunity to help establish a new department focused on RPA (robotic process automation) in Stavanger, Norway. It was an exciting opportunity to be part of, collaborating closely with the Oslo office. I find it enjoyable to look at processes that can be automated from start to finish.

After some years, his career took a new turn, and for the past year and a half, Haakon has been seconded to Equinor as a team leader.

- It’s always fun to try something new. It’s good to seize new opportunities and feel challenged again. It helps me grow.

Haakon leads a team of 17 people, including Equinor employees, Tieto consultants, and other external contributors.

- As a team lead, my main job is to ensure that everyone is motivated and working on tasks they enjoy, within the framework of the solutions we’re developing.

Developing two data applications that drive critical insights

Haakon’s team focuses heavily on collecting and structuring data, primarily through two different applications.

- In one application, we collect data from a variety of sources, and based on a data model, provide users with a "one source of truth." We work on the infrastructure, back-end, front-end, and data management. We also have API access to make the data available elsewhere, and so far, we have registered 2,800 users.

The second application connects geologists and analysts with the repository of test drilling samples.

- We generate data for geologists based on soil samples stored in various locations throughout Norway. This is very helpful when searching for oil and gas deposits.

Working with cutting‑edge technologies and the OSDU Platform

The opportunity to lead people makes Haakon enjoy his new role, but he still maintains his interest in technology.

- We work extensively with the OSDU platform, which stands for Open Subsurface Data Universe. Tieto is at the forefront of development on this platform at Equinor. This creates opportunities to develop new applications, and it’s exciting to think innovatively, explore new paths, and figure out untested solutions.

The team works extensively in Azure and uses Kubernetes to host the solution, with React and .Net C# for development.

- I miss sitting directly with technology development a little, but at the same time, I enjoy the new challenges as a team lead. Having these opportunities is a major reason why I’ve stayed at Tieto.

The variety he experiences as a consultant is important to Haakon.

- Not just variety, but the fact that there are so many opportunities to work with large and important clients, something Tieto has many of.

A strong social community at the Stavanger office

Haakon has around 30 colleagues at the Stavanger office in Norway, and he praises the social environment.

- We are a great group that enjoys each other’s company and meets regularly outside the office. But even in our daily work, we enjoy interacting, whether it’s a quick chat over coffee or a professional discussion. People are very inclusive; no one sits alone unless they need to work undisturbed.

When social events are organized, they often include activities.

- Recently, we had a Christmas party, but the most fun thing I’ve done lately was a surfing course. About 15 of us participated, so we’re clearly an active bunch.
